The following is information regarding the Security Indsutry Authority licensing scheme for
cctv operators. The SIA are the only body who can give a definitive answer on any licensing

Q. What is PSS?
A. PSS stands for public space surveillance, this is part of the defintition given by the sia in who
needs a cctv licence. Public space is defined as any area where the public have largely free and
unrestricted access whether by payment or otherwise.
Q. Who needs a sia cctv licence?
A. Anyone who is part of a contracted service (not inhouse staff) who: monitor the activities of a
member of the public in a public or private place; or identify a particular person. This doesn't include
Security staff who may use cctv to identify a tresspasser on a private site.
Q. I already have a Door Supervisor licence do i still need a cctv licence?
A. Yes if you are undertaking the activities as listed above you will need a cctv licence as well
Q. How much is a cctv licence?
A. Every licence available from the SIA is £245, if it is your second you can obtain a refund from the
SIA of half the cost of the second licence (£122.50)
Q. How long till a licence expires?
A. The SIA licence is valid for three years, after this period it must be renewed.
